How to Highlight Your Skills on Your Resume

Resume & ATS Research

Your skills section is one of the most important parts of your resume. It quickly shows employers what you can do and helps your resume pass through Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS). Here's how to effectively highlight your skills to make your resume stand out.

Understand the Difference Between Hard and Soft Skills

Hard skills are specific, teachable abilities that can be defined and measured, such as programming languages, equipment operation, or foreign language proficiency. Soft skills are interpersonal attributes that help you interact effectively with others, like communication, teamwork, and problem-solving. A strong resume showcases both types.

Identify Your Most Relevant Skills

Review the job description carefully and identify the skills the employer is looking for. Make a list of your skills that match these requirements. Prioritize skills that are mentioned multiple times or emphasized in the job posting.

Create a Dedicated Skills Section

Include a clearly labeled skills section on your resume. This makes it easy for hiring managers to quickly see your qualifications. For technical roles, consider categorizing your skills (e.g., Programming Languages, Software, Project Management Tools).

Quantify Your Skill Levels

When appropriate, indicate your proficiency level for each skill. This is particularly useful for technical skills and languages. You might use terms like "Expert," "Advanced," "Intermediate," or "Basic," or use a visual scale.

Incorporate Keywords for ATS

Many companies use ATS to screen resumes before they reach human reviewers. Include industry-specific keywords and phrases from the job description in your skills section to help your resume pass through these systems.

Demonstrate Skills in Your Work Experience

Don't just list skills—show how you've applied them. In your work experience section, include accomplishments that demonstrate your skills in action. Use strong action verbs and quantify results when possible.

Example: "Implemented a new CRM system that increased sales team efficiency by 25%"

This demonstrates project management, technical implementation, and business improvement skills.

Highlight Transferable Skills

If you're changing careers or industries, emphasize transferable skills that are valuable across different roles. These might include leadership, communication, analysis, or project management.

Include Certifications and Training

If you have certifications or specialized training that validate your skills, include these in a separate section. This provides concrete evidence of your expertise and shows your commitment to professional development.

Update Your Skills Regularly

The importance of different skills changes as industries evolve. Regularly review and update your skills section to reflect current industry demands and your growing expertise.

Tailor Your Skills for Each Application

Customize your skills section for each job application. Emphasize the skills most relevant to the specific position and company. This targeted approach is more effective than using a generic list for all applications.

By thoughtfully highlighting your skills on your resume, you demonstrate your value to potential employers and increase your chances of landing interviews. Remember that the goal is not to list every skill you possess, but to strategically showcase those most relevant to your target position.
