The tool counts every word in your document the way a recruiter's eye does — job titles, dates, bullet points and skills all included. It then converts that number into a page estimate using the density of a normal single-column resume (around 450 words per printed page with 10-11pt body text and standard margins). The verdict compares your word count for resume purposes against the range that hiring managers actually expect for your experience band. Those ranges are not arbitrary: they come from what fits legibly on a page once you keep the white space, section headings and contact block that make a CV readable. You also get a bullet point count, which is a quick proxy for how achievement-driven your resume is. A two-page CV with only eight bullets is usually a paragraph-heavy document that recruiters will skim past; aim for three to six bullets per recent role and one or two for older ones.

The honest answer is that ideal resume length depends far more on your history than on any universal rule. A graduate with two internships has no business filling two pages, while a director with fifteen years and three promotions would have to cut real evidence to squeeze onto one.

• Students and 0-2 years: one page, 350-600 words. Coursework and projects count as experience when you have little else.
• 3-9 years: one page if it fits comfortably, two if the second page is at least two-thirds full. Target 500-800 words.
• 10+ years: two pages, 650-1,000 words, with recent roles taking the lion's share of the space.
• Executive, academic or federal: two to three pages, 800-1,300 words. These formats genuinely expect more detail.

Length tells you whether your CV is the right size. It does not tell you whether it will survive the applicant tracking system that reads it first.
